Listening/Speaking

The student uses the English language to interpret oral input, construct meaning, interact w i th confide n ce both verbal l y and nonverball y , and express ideas effective l y in a varie t y of personal, social, and academic contexts.

Listens and responds during a read aloud from a variety of narrative texts to comprehend and identify main character and setting.
Recognizes simple homophones and figurative language.
Listens and responds to compl e x instructions, complete statements, and answers and formulates the 5 W-Quest i ons as well as how questions (who, what, when, whe r e, why, and how) in formal and informal di s cussions.
Applies correct language patterns to organize events from read alouds of narrative te x t s.
Identifies, states, and paraphrases the main idea or topic and important details from learned concepts or r ead alouds of a var i ety of simp l e informational texts; uses transitions to tell, retell, and explain a story using acquired vocabulary and appropriate language structure.
Reading

The student uses reading strategies, lit e ra r y ana l y s is, and critical thinking skills to c onstruct meaning and develop an understanding as w e ll as an appreciation of a varie t y of gen r es of both fiction a nd nonfiction.

Decodes words and phrases; reads fluently.
Analyzes t he text and identifies text features to enhance comprehension.
Uses context clues and resources to build vocabulary, verify meaning, determine the meaning of unfam i liar words, and transfer meaning into a variety of narrative and expo s itory texts.
Identifies the main character(s), compares and contrasts character traits, and i dentifies setting within narrative and exp o sitory text.
Uses story organization of beg i nning, middle, and end to identify sequence within nar r ative and expo s ito r y text; makes predictions and connections.
Identifies differences between fiction and nonfiction; identifies main idea or topic and fact and opin i on in informational text.
Writing

The student effective l y com m unicates to a variety of audiences in all forms of w r iting through the use of the w ri t ing process, proper grammar, and a ge- appropriate expressive vocab ul a r y .

Arranges words in alphabetical order using first, second, and third l etter criteria.
Applies phonemic a w areness, phonics strategies, and structural analysis to correctly spell words that have three letter clusters, common spelling patterns, and uncommon consonant patterns.
Uses appropriate grammar and mechanics to write complete decla r ative, interrogative, imperative, and ex c l ama t ory sentences; identifies the parts of speech correctly.
Identifies elements in descriptive and narrative f o rms of writing; uses a variety of sentence types to write d e scriptive and narrative paragraphs.
Follows the writing process; appli e s prewriting strategies to generate ideas; uses the dictionary as an aid in the writing process; identifies spelling errors in writing.
